Workshops for Wellness: Practical Tools for Personal…

As a Mental Health Coach/Consultant working with all populations within the community, I quickly learned there was a significant disconnect between those who suffered from a mental illness and those who did not. I began to notice that people were misinformed, and there were various misconceptions about mental health conditions and those who suffer from them. I started talking to my clients, family members, and friends more about their thoughts on this taboo topic. What I found was that they all felt uncomfortable discussing mental health and believed it was not their problem. So, I decided to step outside of the box and go into the community to raise awareness about the challenges associated with managing mental health.
Although I hit the ground running, I did not recognize what was unfolding within myself. My own path took a turn when I was diagnosed with Dermatofibrosarcoma Protuberans (DFSP) Skin Cancer, which affected both my physical and mental health.
From there, let’s just say my life took a 180-degree turn. Any form of cancer can send you on an emotional roller coaster that you don’t see coming. Many people have no idea what to expect. I certainly didn’t, and I had no clue what was ahead. I asked myself, “What’s next?” My physical and mental health became my priorities. I learned that healing is internal work that takes time, and there can be great value in various sources of guidance.
I adopted the motto:
“Live your life, not your cancer.”
I started living my life with no regrets. I reflected on all the choices I’ve made and the “what ifs” that could have changed where I am and who I am today.
Rather than teaching, advising, directing, or prescribing what another person should do, I act as a guide to help others forge their own unique path toward greater well-being. Through my experiences, I now advocate breaking down stigmas around mental health, raising awareness of how our mental and physical health go hand in hand, and providing advocacy to help families live better and healthier lives.
Has it been a smooth road?
The road has definitely not been smooth; however, it has been well worth it. I tell people that sometimes the worst things in life can end up being the best things to happen for your life.
Be Balanced Health & Wellness brings hope, courage, and my authentic self, which I hope inspires others. Be Balanced’s goal is to help our clients achieve and maintain a healthy lifestyle and overall wellness and to live the life they love instead of struggling to get through the day. We promote complete wellness by reflecting on our mental and physical health in order to live in peace and harmony. As a result, I created a safe space for people to come in hopes of gaining knowledge and information about mental and physical health.
